Male Breast Reduction

Gynecomastia is the abnormal enlargement of male breasts. It can be caused by multiple factors. The most common is the hormonal imbalance that occurs during puberty. There is a higher circulating amount of estrogen present than normal causing the breasts to grow. The use of drugs such as marijuana and hormones can cause this as well. A medical evaluation can be done to rule out any associated conditions.

The treatment involves the removal of the excess glandular breast and contouring the chest. The surgery depends on the amount of glandular enlargement and skin that is present. it also depends on if the breast is dense and glandular or soft and fatty. Typically all of the subareolar tissue is dense and will need direct excision. The remaining breast can be removed with liposuction or direct surgical excision.  Larger breasts may require a skin excision.  This will be discussed with you during the consultation.

The choice of anesthesia depends on the severity of the gynecomastia. A simple subglandular enlargement can be performed under local anesthesia in the office or local with sedation. Larger breasts will require general anesthesia. The recovery will also depend on the amount of surgery.  The chest is wrapped with a pressure garment for one to three weeks.  The swelling takes three weeks or longer to resolve.  The sutures are removed within a week.  The scars fade and are usually are imperceptible with time.

Insurance:  A portion of the surgery may be covered by insurance.  This will be determined during your preoperative consultation with Dr. Day.
